Annual canoe race is Saturday

Posted

Racers, grab your paddles for the annual running of the Sugar Creek Canoe Race on Saturday.

Two races will begin at 10 a.m. at the Sugar Creek Canoe Launch, 624 Lafayette Ave., Crawfordsville.

All skill levels are invited to participate in either race. The main race is 15.5 miles and ends at Deers Mill Bridge. The second race, known as the Bob Stwalley Short Fun Race, travels four miles.

Registration is available online at www.visitmoco.com or at the start line beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The annual race is organized by the Friends of Sugar Creek and Montgomery County Visitors Bureau. Organizers moved the date of this year’s race. The last few races have been canceled due to inclement weather and high water on Sugar Creek.

“It looks like moving to a later day will be a good thing,” MCVC Director Heather Shirk said. “The weather forecast looks great and the creek levels are going to be very good. We are expecting some fast times this year.”

“We are excited for the canoe and kayak races on our beautiful waterway, Sugar Creek. Whether someone is a seasoned paddler and wants to go 15.5 miles or just have fun on the short race, we are ready to welcome all of the paddlers.”

Traveling down one of Indiana’s most scenic waterways, canoeist and kayakers will vie for awards. United States Canoe Association members can earn season points in the long race, which is USCA sanctioned.

Each race will award men, women, mixed and children competing in both canoes and kayaks.

Entrants may rent canoes at Sugar Creek Campground and Clements Canoe Rentals. Shuttle service is provided.

The cost to register is $20 per paddler for the USCA race and $10 per paddler for the recreational short race. Active military personnel do not have to pay a registration fee.

Go online to www.visitmoco.com for more information or to register.
