The Junior Girl Scouts of Troop 4383 are earning their Bronze Awards by collecting books for teens.
Beginning Monday, organizers are asking the community to donate new or gently used books for girls and boys in middle school and high school. Drop off locations include the Hoosier Heartland State Bank in both east and south Crawfordsville, as well as the Linden location, Indiana Department of Child Services, and the Crawfordsville District Public Library.
This book drive will benefit the Isaiah 117 House, which provides physical and emotional support in a safe and loving home for children who are removed from their homes for concerns of their safety, they are usually brought to a child welfare service office to await placement. This wait can be a few hours to several days. These children often have nothing with them and are scared, lonely, hungry and in dirty clothing.
Isaiah 117 House provides a comforting home where these children can instead be brought to wait — a place that is safe with friendly and loving volunteers who provide clean clothes, smiles, toys and blankets. This space allows children to receive the comfort and care they need while child welfare staff can do the necessary paperwork and identify a good placement. The Girls Scouts of Troop 4383 are fourth and fifth grade girls who decided they wanted to do a service project to help foster children. The Girl Scouts are spending 20 hours creating the project that will benefit the community and make a lasting impact.
Monetary donations can be accepted if donors would like the Girl Scouts to choose books to buy. The Girl Scouts are using some of the cookie money the troop earned from selling Girl Scout Cookies to give back and purchase more books.
