Robot guides elementary students through lessons

Posted

The students in Tori Current’s classroom at Turkey Run Elementary School have a new tool to assist in their learning process.

Carver, a state-of-the-art robot, has been guiding students through lessons to assist them in various social skills lessons. State Sen. Spencer Deery visited Current’s classroom to observe the students using Carver on April 23.

During his visit, Deery was able to observe instructional assistant Shawna Crowder work with the students and guide them through the lessons that are taught by Carver. The classroom began incorporating Carver into the classroom in February. The robot is an added tool as a part of the daily routine and the students look forward to their time spent completing the lessons that Carver provides.

“Shawna running the program allows me as a teacher to assist other students with their instructions,” Current said. “In many situations, we have asked the students, ‘What would Carver do?’ They are very receptive to Carver and it helps the students to make decisions.”

The robot speaks 20% slower than most people, which allows the student time to process and understand what tasks they need to complete. Carver’s unique approach involves engaging students in various scenarios to enhance their ability to navigate emotions and social interactions.

Deery was instrumental in securing the necessary funding for the school district to purchase Carver and the associated lessons. This funding was provided to the school through grant money.  His visit allowed him to see how Carver is being used in the classroom and how the students are benefiting from these lessons, which are a part of their curriculum.
