Workshop tackles poverty simulation

Posted

Together, with Putnam County Community Foundation and the Indiana Nonprofit Resource Network, Montgomery County Community Foundation hosts an eight session Nonprofit Learning Series. The next workshop in the series is April 12 and rather than a traditional lecture/discussion format, a Poverty Simulation is planned for attendees to experience. The hope is to create a broader awareness of the realities of poverty for policymakers, community leaders and others who frequently deal with low-income families.

During the simulation, participants assume roles of families facing poverty. They must provide for basic necessities and shelter on a limited budget during the course of four 15-minute “weeks.” They interact with human service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors, job interviewers, police officers, and others. After the simulation, facilitated discussion allows the group to take the experience even further, fostering understanding and giving insight into life in poverty.

The poverty simulation will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 at the Crawfordsville Country Club, 3272 W. Country Club Road. Cost is $15 if registered in advance, $25 at the door (if space is available). Lunch is included. Due to the nature of the experience, the maximum number of participants is 72; therefore early registration is encouraged to be assured a spot.

Payment may be dropped off at MCCF, 119 E. Main St., or mailed to MCCF at P.O. Box 334, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
