The Montgomery County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner was well attended on Friday night at the Crawfordsville Country Club. “The party is in good shape and our attendance this year is even larger than 2012,” said Scott Molin, Chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Central Committee. “People forget that we hold the U.S. House of Representatives, the Indiana Governor’s Office, the Indiana General Assembly and the vast majority of elected offices in Montgomery County and Crawfordsville,” Molin added.

U.S. Representative Todd Rokita from the fourth district was the keynote speaker, he proudly spoke about his time at Wabash College and what it taught him about economics. “From a budget perspective we face a debt crisis of $16.5 trillion and growing – this is about personal responsibility – this party, is a party of purpose!”  Congressman Rokita proudly referenced a quote from former President Ronald Reagan, “Government exists to protect us from each other.. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.”

During his address, Rokita who sits on the House budget committee explained how the Federal government is borrowing more than 42 cents of every dollar it spends, he also spoke proudly of his home state’s fiscal responsibility. “In Indiana, balancing our budget and never spending more than we earn is common sense.”

Rokita believes that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security need to be reformed.  Those three programs make up 67 percent of the Federal budget. “I want us to transition Medicare from a defined benefit fee for service structure to a defined

contribution structure and require an aggressive means test.”  Rokita also believes that using free market principles will lower costs through more choices, competition and patient control. The congressman also agrees that there should be no changes for current beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare.

The congressman rolled out his American Debt Warrior Project which targeted these points. If your family spent like the Federal Government, What would it look like?

Just drop eight zeros off of the budget or divide spending by 100 million American households:

Annual Family Income $25,000

Annual Family Spending $36,000

New Annual Debt on the Credit Card $11,000

Total Annual Budget Cuts $310

Outstanding Credit Card Balance: $165,000

Future Purchases on Credit Card $1,000,000!

Rokita ended his speech by emphasizing that he is fighting for real reforms that reduce government, cut spending and preserve Medicare and Social Security for future generations.

State Representative Tim Brown (R) Crawfordsville who is Chairman of the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee echoed Rokita’s sentiments. “Our party is strong, I’m working hard on Indiana’s priorities, especially education.”  Crawfordsville Councilwoman Heather Perkins Denison also commented on the excellent turnout. “It’s nice to see so many people come out and support the Republican party.”
