South Bend council considers buying, razing building

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The South Bend city council is considering buying a building that sits close to an intersection and is frequently clipped by turning trucks.

The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1iolHb0 ) a bill before the Common Council seeks to appropriate $210,000 to pay for the Polish National Alliance. The plan is to demolish all or part of the building, which includes a banquet hall and bowling alley, in order to engineer a wider intersection.

The proposed demolition would mark the end of an era on the west side, once home to thousands of Polish immigrants but now better known for its Hispanic population.

South Bend's community investment Executive Director says the city has no other plans for the property at this time.
