Athenians claim final SAC title

Crawfordsville’s boys’ tennis team won the final Sagamore Athletic Conference Tennis Championship by defeating Frankfort 5-0 on Wednesday. The Athenian’s swept the SAC with a 7-0 conference record.

“I’m really proud of the effort my guys put in tonight,” Coach Craig Brainard said. “It has been weird trying to find a rhythm with the way the weather has been this week, but our team found their focus when it counted most.”

Crawfordsville wasted little time to win the championship. All five matches were won in two sets.

Athenian No. 1 singles player Rowan Gambrel defeated Jackson Ray 6-1, 6-1 and the No. 2 singles player Wyatt Motz beat Kelby Santos 6-0, 6-3. Jude Coursey completed the singles sweep by beating Sam McAtee 6-1. 6-0.

Crawfordsville’s No. 1 doubles team had to play extra tennis in their first set but they prevailed when Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon won 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The Athenians’ No. 2 doubles team of Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt pitched a shutout 6-0, 6-0 over Jack Michael and Landen Stewart.

Crawfordsville (12-2) played Lafayette Jeff at home Thursday. The Athenians will host the sectional beginning Oct. 1.

 

WeBo defeats Chargers

North Montgomery traveled to Dover on Wednesday to play Western Boone. The Stars won the match 3-2.

Winning for the Chargers were No. 3 singles player Dane Elliott and No. 2 doubles team Keaton Brown and Cayden Keller.

Elliot beat Jacob Collins 6-3, 6-2 and the Chargers’ No. 2 doubles team won 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) over Eli Mitchell and Burke Cavins. North’s No. 1 singles player Beckett Martin lost to Gavin Hawkins 6-0, 6-0 and Chargers’ No. 2 singles player Cade Cole lost 6-1, 6-1 to Jon Rutherford.

The Chargers’ No.1 singles team of Austin Biddle and Carter Thompson was defeated by Owen Oakly and Easton Nance 6-1. 6-1.

North Montgomery (7-10, 3-4 SAC) finished the regular season Thursday at Attica. The will play in the Crawfordsville Sectional which begins Oct. 1.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Crawfordsville falls to Tri-West

Tri-West proved why they are one of the top ranked 3A teams in Indiana by defeating a good Crawfordsville team in three sets. Game scores were 25-15, 25-9, 25-14.

Crawfordsville’s Reese Price had six kills and Claire Peacock had nine assists. Katy Grace Whitecotton recorded two blocks.

Tri-West (19-2, 6-0 SAC) can win the SAC championship on Oct. 8 against Western Boone.

The Athenians (13-7, 2-2 SAC) played Fountain Central on Thursday and will compete in the Clinton Central Invitational on Saturday.
