Athenians stay undefeated in SAC

Crawfordsville took one more step toward the Sagamore Athletic Conference crown on Thursday with a 5-0 victory over Tri-West.

Crawfordsville’s No. 1 singles player Rowan Gambrel defeated Eric Dean 6-0, 6-2 and No. 2 singles player Wyatt Motz beat Wyatt McMillen 6-0, 6-0. No. 3 singles player Jude Coursey defeated Michael Gibson 6-0, 6-0.

The Athenian doubles teams kept the shutout intact. The No. 1 team of Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon defeated Graham Willhelm and Landry Slagle 6-1, 6-1. In the No. 2 doubles match Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt beat Dalen Simmons and Noah Welsh 6-0, 6-1.

“I am proud of the guys for keeping up the intensity this late in the season,” Crawfordsville coach Craig Brainard said. “They continue to push themselves and improve, which is all I can ask for as a coach.”

Next for the Athenians is a trip to West Lafayette on Monday. On Tuesday, Crawfordsville will host Frankfort and attempt to win the conference outright.

 

Mustangs topple Attica

After a conference loss Monday to South
Vermillion, Fountain Central bounced back with a 5-0 win over Wabash River Conference rival Attica. Attica did not win a game the entire match.

No. 1 singles player Gave McCollum defeated Caiden Ashley 6-0. 6-0 and No. 2 singles player Skylar Hoagland beat Blane Inman 6-0, 6-0. Ayden Batchelor won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles position defeating Cullen Driver. 

In the No. 1 doubles match, Mustangs Levi McTagertt and Levi Miller defeated Joe Shoaf and Logan Sichts 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles team of William Armstrong won by forfeit.

The Mustangs host Western Boone on Tuesday and will celebrate senior night with five seniors after the match.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Mustangs fall to Covington

Covington defeated Fountain Central on Thursday 3-0. Game scores were 25-15, 25-10, 25-7.

The visiting Trojans were led by Alex Sutherlin’s 14 kills.

The Trojans are now 15-4 and 5-0 in the Wabash River Conference.

For the Mustangs seniors Josie Harshbarger and Rylee Simko were the team’s top defenders in th contest.

Fountain Central will play at home Monday against Frankfort. Covington is playing in the Lafayette Jeff  Invitational today.

 

SOCCER

South falls to Bethesda Christian

Southmont girls’ soccer team lost to Bethesda Christian by a score of 6-5. Mountie Jessica Hale had five goals. The Mounties travel to Benton Central today and will play at Cascade on Monday.

 

Crawfordsville girls win

Crawfordsville girls’ soccer team defeated North Putnam 5-0 on Thursday. Crawfordsville plays today at Northview.

 

Covington beats Twin Lakes

Covington girls’ soccer defeated Twin Lakes 4-0 on Thursday,

Covington scored three goals in the first half and added one in the second half.

Trojan Rhyane Beck scored two goals. Also scoring for Covington were Keira Smith and Bre Batley.

Covington (6-5-1) will play at Rossville on Saturday. The Trojans are on a three-game winning streak.

 

Chargers fall to Frankfort

North Montgomery’s girls’ soccer team lost to Frankfort 3-0 on Thursday.

The Chargers had plenty of chances to score but were still shutout.

“We controlled possession and won the shots on goal battle, however, we couldn’t find the back of the net,” Charger coach Julie Hodges said. “We are still looking to start the game stronger than we have been. We have improved a lot this season, but now we need to start putting it all together.”

North Montgomery will travel to Tri-West on Monday and host county rival Crawfordsville on Thursday.

 

Crawfordsville ties North Putnam

Crawfordsville’s boys’ soccer team tied North Putnam 2-2 on Thursday. The Athenians also tied Benton Central on Monday 1-1.

The Athenians are now 3-4-2 and will play today at Northview.
