FLOYDS KNOBS, Ind. (AP) — Police responding to a domestic disturbance at a southern Indiana home shot and critically wounded an armed man early Monday after he refused to drop the weapon, state police said.
Four deputies with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the home about 1 a.m. to find an “ongoing domestic situation" between a woman and her husband, Sgt. Carey Huls with Indiana State Police said in a news release.
The deputies were speaking to the couple when the man “walked away from the door and returned with a shotgun,” Huls said. Deputies repeatedly ordered the man to drop the gun before at least one officer opened fire, striking the man, he said.
No deputies were injured.
Officers rendered first-aid at the scene before the man was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, where Huls said he was listed in critical condition.
Huls said that after the shooting the man was found to also have a handgun in his possession.
State police are investigating the shooting. Huls said the deputies were either not wearing their body cameras or did not have them turned on, so there was no police video of the shooting.
The shooting occurred at a residence in an unincorporated community near New Albany, an Ohio River city located just north of Louisville, Kentucky.
