Mounties, Chargers advance to regional

Posted

ATTICA — Southmont’s girls’ golf team placed second out of 10 teams and North Montgomery placed third in Saturday’s IHSAA Girls Golf Sectional at Harrison Hills Golf Club in Attica. Mountie senior Addison Meadows was the medalist after shooting a 2-under par 72 on the 18-hole course.

The Mounties were disappointed they fell short to Western Boone. The Stars shot a 363 and the Mounties were oh so close with a 365. Western Boone bettered Southmont by six strokes in the recent Sagamore Conference meet.

The Mounties did shoot their best 18-hole score of the season and will play Sept. 26 in the Harrison Regional.

“I knew we were playing our best golf right now and that we would have a chance to win,” Southmont Coach Bill Whalen said. “I tell the girls we cannot control what others do. We were so close. I really enjoy coaching them. We have one more week together. At this stage you just want to move on and we are moving on.”

North Montgomery is pleased they will move on too. The top three teams qualify for the regional, so the Chargers will join their county rivals in Lafayette.

Charger Coach Bob Ryker said his team played the best they have all season and it was at the right time. The Chargers, like the Mounties, shot their best score for 18 holes on the season.

“I am extremely pleased with the effort the girls put forth today,” Ryker said. “The girls believed they could move on and believing is 90% of the battle. When the third place marker was placed on the board the weight was off our shoulders and now we get to play next weekend.”

“I expect the team to go out, have fun and enjoy the experience,” Ryker said.

Crawfordsville competed in the sectional with two players, Madyson
Posthaur and Serenty Wright. Neither girl advanced as a singles player, however first-year Athenian Coach Erin Gilland said the season has been good and she expects to see the program grow next year.

“We hope to have a full team next year and Madyson and Serenty will be our team captains,” Gilland said. “I am very proud of both of my girls. Madyson shot a season best and Serenity had a season low on the front nine. This season was a great learning experience for the team and for me.”

Fountain Central saw their season come to an end. The team only had three players all season. Coach Meaghan Doss said she was proud of the girls all season and was pleased to see their improvement.
