Girls Golf State Finals

Meadows concludes season at State Finals

CARMEL — Great players have great expectations for themselves. When those expectations aren’t met, that can lead to disappointment. Southmont’s Addison Meadows for the third straight year competed on the last day of the IHSAA  Girls Golf State Finals at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel on Saturday. After shooting a +11 83 on Friday in her first round, Meadows came back and shot a +7 79 to improve her score. Her two day total of +18 162 earned her a 33rd place finish. That finish while lower than last season’s T28, Meadows did improve her score from her sophomore season.

For the Mountie junior, she has high expectations and lofty goals and was discouraged with her performance.

“I’m just disappointed in how I played on both days really,” Meadows said after completing her round on Saturday. “The execution of my game just wasn’t there and I know I’m better than that. I shouldn’t have thrown up so many high numbers on both days.”

Meadows began her day on the front nine with five consecutive pars and it looked like she was on her way to a great round. She doubled hole six followed by a bogey on hole eight. Then the dreaded back nine, which has given Meadows problems all three years. Hole 10 she bogeyed before hitting her tee shot on 11 out of bounds and it resulting in a triple. She birdied 12 before doubling again on 13. The rest of her round was bogey free and had one birdie. A couple of holes proved to be the difference in her day.

Southmont coach Bill Whalen noted how despite her tough two days, Meadows was still one of just 108 girls golfers who get to play at the State Finals.

“She was the 33rd best golfer in the state this year and that’s an accomplishment that she should be proud of,” Whalen said. “Today she played 15 holes even par and three holes seven over. It was really only two bad swings that cost her. I think it’s going to take her coming here any chance she can and plat that back side because I’m not sure what it is but that’s been her Achilles heel. She still deserves all the accolades that have come her way and that she’s going to continue to earn. I’m confident that she’s capable of being a top 10 golfer in the state. That’s her goal that she’s been chasing since day one of her freshman year.”

The off-season officially begins for Meadows who will be playing, as she always has, year-round. This past season Meadows helped lead the Mounties to a county title, was the sectional medalist and fired a 67 earlier this season which set a personal best.

In what will be her final season of high school golf next fall,  Meadows will for sure leave it all out there to accomplish her goals and dreams.
