Dementia seminar slated

Posted

Mom left the stove on … again. What if the next time there is a pot still on? Or a towel touches the burners?  s she forgetting anything else? Does this mean she has dementia or Alzheimer’s? And what do you do?

Dementia is a general term for memory loss and other memory impairments serious enough to interfere with daily life. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in nine aged people 65 and older are affected by Alzheimer’s disease which accounts for more than 5 million Americans currently living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

Join organizers 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Whitlock Place Senior Living, 1719 S. Elm St., for an open discussion seminar with Yvonne Ledford of Physiocare Home Healthcare. She will provide information on recognizing the signs and symptoms of dementia, what to do next and how to care for a loved one with a diagnosis.

Ledford has more than 25 years of healthcare experience and a passion for helping families cope with loved ones diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. After the passing of her grandfather, who would be later diagnosed with Lewy Body, she has used his journey for her inspiration to know more. Every workshop, conference and meeting she attends is in his memory. Ledford now leads two support groups for the Alzheimer’s Association, as well as sits on the planning committee for the annual walk.

The seminar is sponsored by Whitlock Place Senior Living, Franciscan Health Crawfordsville, Franciscan Physician Network and Montgomery Adult Guardianship Services. A light dinner will be served.
