Gilland and Jeffery shine for Athenians and Chargers
Crawfordsville and North Montgomery boys golf competed at the Covington Invite on Saturday. The Chargers came in as the defending champions and while they didn’t defend their title, they still had a strong showing with a 3rd place finish by shooting a 361. Neal Jeffery had the best outing of his season so far with a 76 to lead the way. Rohen Barnes and Alex Chapman both shot 97’s.
Jeffery and Crawfordsville’s Tanner Gilland would compete in a playoff for medalist honors as Gilland also shot a 76. The Cville junior would best Jeffery in the playoff and come away with the overall medalist while Jeffery placed second.
Foley shoots season best for Mounties
Not to be out-done by both Jeffery and Gilland, Southmont’s Austin Foley had himself a very good round at the Greencastle Invite on Saturday. Foley, like Gilland and Jeffery both, shot a 76 to lead the way for the Mounties who shot a 379 and placed fourth overall. Jacob Fox was second with a 97 for the Mounties while Cole Rhoads carded a 98. Jesse Smith shot a 108 to round out the scoring for the Mounties.
Overall the county’s top three golfers all had strong showings as they all three shot 76’s.
Baseball
Chargers fall to Gophers on road
North Montgomery baseball traveled to Clinton Prairie on Saturday and saw their nine-game winning streak come to and end as the host Gophers bested the Chargers by a final score of 9-3. Defensive miscues cost the chargers especially in the fourth inning where three Charger errors allowed six Gopher runs to come home and score.
North Montgomery (13-4) got on the board with a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth. For the game they had four hits with Cade Cole having two and Corbin Meadows, and Quintin Glassing have one each. Charger ace Jarrod Kirsch pitched the first three innings and was perfect with no hits or runs allowed while he struck out six. Meadows came in and threw the next two innings where he allowed six hits, and seven runs but just three earned.
North will now shift their focus to the biggest two games of their season so far when the Chargers welcome county rival Crawfordsville (11-9, 7-2 SAC) on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the Chargers trailing CHS by just a single game in the SAC standings.
