Mike Melvin

Mike Melvin is a math teacher and auditorium supervisor at North Montgomery. He has lived in Montgomery County his entire life, except during the years he attended Valparaiso University. He got his job at NMHS right after graduation.

In his spare time, Melvin enjoys spending time with his family and friends and supporting local theatre productions. He believes that all three county schools put on amazing shows, as does the Vanity Theater.

“The Vanity Theater is an asset to our community, and they provide so many enriching experiences for our students and adults as well,” he said. “If you haven’t been, please check it out.”

Melvin and his wife, Katie, have two children, Jax and Addy.

“I would not be able to participate in an event like this without their love and support,” Melvin said.

Because of his theatre background, Melvin enjoys singing and dancing to show tunes. When he was asked to be a Star, he was worried they had the wrong number, but was also honored since Dancing with the Montgomery County Stars is such a fun event and is a great fundraiser for the youth in the community. He decided to participate in the YSB fundraiser because he wanted to jump outside his comfort zone and do something he does not normally do.

Melvin holds his students to high standards while they perform at North, so he wanted to hold himself to those same high standards. He also believes that the YSB is a great asset to the community and has many programs that support children.

“My partner Ashley is an amazing dance partner and friend,” he said. “She has made this experience so much fun, and I know that will be reflected in our performance. All of the performances will be great, and I know the public will enjoy themselves. Plus, they would be supporting a wonderful program.”

Ashley Kight

Ashley Kight is a fifth grade teacher at Pleasant Hill Elementary. She has lived in Montgomery County her whole life. She is married to David Kight, a teacher at Fountain Central High School, and they have three children, Will, Claire and Ainsley, two dogs and a cat.

“It’s a bit crazy at our house at times, but loads of fun,” she said.

In her spare time, Kight enjoys spending time with her family. They love going on walks. Her husband takes her to football and basketball games and they have fun trying new restaurants. She also enjoys reading and cooking.

Kight’s background in dance includes tap and jazz lessons at Crawfordsville Academy of Dance. She was also in show choir for many years. She loves to dance to all kinds of music, but 80’s and hip hop are probably her favorite.

Kight participates in the annual fundraiser because “The Youth Service Bureau has so many programs that support the children in our community. Being an educator for 17 years, I have seen the positive impact that these programs have made on many of the students I have taught. Dancing with the Montgomery County Stars is such a fun event and raises money for these programs.”

Kight wants the public to come support her and Melvin because he is getting out of his comfort zone, but more importantly his excitement and determination have inspired her.

“We have a fun dance line up and we are ready to entertain you,” she said.
